The race for the Premier League trophy may be officially over as of Sunday. Chelsea defeated Leicester City yesterday in a late 3-1 final to reach 80 points on the league table, and move within one win of officially claiming the crown of league champions.
The Blues made a trip north to King Power Stadium for a rescheduled bout with the Foxes. The hosts made it tough for the league leaders after scoring the opening goal. However, Chelsea climbed back into the game with an equalizer early in the second half with a Didier Drogba equalizer, followed by two go ahead goals from John Terry and Ramires respectively.
The result puts Chelsea a full 13 points above rivals Manchester City and Arsenal on the league table. The Gunners have one extra game in hand, which is the only thing that has kept the Blues from already clinching the Premier League trophy.
Chelsea returns home to play the early game on Sunday at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace, a team that lost their two previous games against lower seeded clubs West Brom and Hull. The setback could put the Eagles on a path to three consecutive losses courtesy of one of the toughest football stadiums in the UK.
But Palace may also be motivated by the possibility of playing spoiler to the league leaders. If the visitors do upset the hosts of Sunday’s game, and Arsenal scores a big away win on Monday over Hull, the race is still on.
If Chelsea does win as the smart money suggests, Arsenal must win at KC Stadium to prevent the Blues from clinching the title. A win for Chelsea and a loss or draw for Arsenal will erase any bets against the Blues missing out on the title.
What do you think? Will Chelsea be crowned Premier League champions as of Monday or is this season still far from over?
