Transfer deadline day has come around again, meaning that fans of clubs up and down the land will be crossing their fingers and hoping that their team manages to make a big signing at the last minute. While there aren’t many huge deals potentially on the horizon, there could still be some significant moves – and there’s always the chance of a surprise signing happening as well.
So far, clubs in the Premier League have spent around £150m on new players during this transfer window, and one player who could contribute further to that figure is Mamadou Sakho. He is rumoured to be interesting both Southampton and Crystal Palace, who will have to pay around £20m to secure his services. It’s known that Jurgen Klopp is keen to sell the defender, so there’s a good possibility of a deal being made today.
Crystal Palace could be the busiest Premier League club today, as Sam Allardyce looks to strengthen his squad ahead of a relegation battle. Aside from Sakho, it is also understood that the club are hoping to sign Luka Milivojevic from Olympiacos, as well as the Uruguayan defender Martin Caceres, who is currently a free agent.
One player could also be leaving Palace today though, as Andros Townsend could be on the verge of sealing a move back to Newcastle. The England international has seemingly fallen out of favour with Sam Allardyce, and Newcastle would certainly welcome a player of his quality to bolster their aspirations for promotion.
After full-back Branislav Ivanovic agreed to join Zenit St Petersburg, Chelsea are also thought to be looking to find a quick replacement, and their number one target seems to be Sead Kolasinac of Schalke. There could also be a player leaving Chelsea today, as the future of Asmir Begovic still seems to be in doubt. The keeper, who is the back up to Thibault Courtois, is keen to move away, and there is interest from Bournemouth, who are prepared to pay around £12m for the Bosnian.
Begovic’s departure seems to hinge on whether Chelsea can find a replacement for him though, with the favourite thought to be Craig Gordon of Celtic. Whether he’ll be prepared to settle for a place on the bench remains to be seen though.
The biggest deal of the day could well be one for Odion Ighalo though, then Watford striker who has so far failed to spark this season. It is understood that he has been the subject of a large offer of around £20m from Chinese side Changchun Yatai, which would almost certainly see him offered a huge wage to make the move.
